What E-Liquid Is Made Of and Why It Degrades

A standard e-liquid contains four main components: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavour concentrates, and, in nicotine-containing products, pharmaceutical-grade nicotine. Each of these components responds differently to environmental conditions, and understanding their vulnerabilities helps explain the storage recommendations that follow.

Nicotine is the most sensitive ingredient. In its pure form it is a colourless to pale yellow liquid, and the darkening that characterises degraded e-liquid is primarily the result of nicotine oxidising when exposed to oxygen, light, or heat. Oxidised nicotine produces a darker colour, a characteristic peppery smell, and reduced pharmacological activity, meaning the liquid delivers less effective nicotine per puff. The process is irreversible once it has occurred.

Flavour concentrates are complex mixtures of aroma chemicals, many of which are volatile, meaning they evaporate readily. Heat drives off these volatile components, reducing flavour complexity and altering the profile of the liquid. Light: Ultraviolet Damage Is Real

Ultraviolet light breaks down both nicotine and many flavour compounds through a process called photolysis. The amber glass or dark plastic is functional, not decorative, providing meaningful protection against UV exposure during storage and transit.

A bottle left on a windowsill, even away from direct sunlight, may show visible colour change and flavour deterioration within a week or two. The standard steeping method involves storing the sealed bottle in a cool, dark place, shaking it periodically, and optionally leaving the cap loosely placed for the first day or two to allow any residual alcohol from flavour concentrates to evaporate.
